Frequently Asked Questions About Splashback Tiles

What tiles work best for a kitchen splashback? Plus

Ceramic and porcelain are both common choices. The best option depends on the look you want, the tile specification, and where it will be installed.

What colour splashback works with kitchen cabinets? Plus

That depends on the cabinetry and worktop. Stronger colours can create contrast against neutral units, while softer tones often work well where the kitchen already has plenty of movement or colour.

Should a splashback match the worktop? Plus

It does not need to match exactly. Picking up a tone from the worktop can connect the two surfaces, while contrast can make the splashback more of a feature.

Are small tiles good for splashbacks? Plus

Yes. Smaller formats work particularly well because they fit naturally into the space between worktops and wall units and give you more freedom with layout.

Can I order splashback tile samples? Plus

Yes. Free samples let you compare colour, glaze and texture directly against your cabinetry and worktop before deciding which tiles to order online.

Splashback tiles: a smaller area can take more character

Because a splashback is usually contained between worktops, cabinetry and shelving, it gives you room to make a stronger choice without committing the whole kitchen to it.

A deep green glaze, warm terracotta tone or decorative pattern can bring life to simpler units, while a softer neutral surface can add texture without competing with a more expressive worktop.

Spanish and Italian tile makers are particularly strong in glazed ceramics, colour and smaller decorative formats, which makes this one of the areas where their surface design really comes into its own.

Work with what is already in the kitchen

Splashback tiles sit directly beside cabinetry and worktops, so those fixed finishes should usually lead the decision.

  • If the worktop has heavy marble veining, a quieter glaze or plain colour can give it space.
  • Simpler stone or solid worktops can carry more pattern, variation or relief.

Finish matters too. Glossy glazes reflect kitchen lighting and bring more movement to colour, while matt and softly textured surfaces create a quieter backdrop.

A tiled splashback also has a practical job around sinks and cooking areas. Think about how easily you can wipe away water, grease and everyday marks: deep relief creates more detail, but can take more effort to clean than a smooth surface.

Format changes the whole effect

Smaller rectangular tiles create more grout lines and rhythm, while larger formats make the splashback feel calmer and more continuous.

Layout gives you another layer.

  • Brick bond feels familiar and relaxed.
  • Stacked tiles create cleaner lines.
  • Herringbone introduces more movement without needing a patterned surface.

Plan the height and edges of the tiled area alongside sockets, shelving and the cooker. Check the appliance manufacturer's clearance requirements and the tile specification before deciding what to install behind a hob.

Are splashback tiles easy to clean?

Smooth ceramic and porcelain surfaces are generally straightforward to wipe, but the finish, texture and grout joints affect maintenance. Follow the manufacturer's cleaning advice and use products suitable for both tile and grout when removing grease or stains.
