Frequently Asked Questions About Wood Effect Tiles

What makes wood-effect tiles look realistic? Plus

Grain detail, knots, shade variation, and the way patterns change between planks all contribute to a more convincing timber look.

Do wood-effect tiles come in colours other than brown? Plus

Yes. The look can range from pale washed tones and greyed timber to warm oak, honey and deeper brown shades.

Does plank direction matter with wood-effect tiles? Plus

Yes. The direction of long rectangular tiles influences how the eye travels through the room and how strongly the joints are noticed.

Are wood-effect tiles made from porcelain? Plus

Many are porcelain, but not every product is identical. Check the individual specification for material and intended application.

Can I order wood-effect tile samples? Plus

Yes. Free samples help you compare grain, colour and surface detail with furniture, cabinetry and other finishes at home.

Start with the grain, not just the colour

Two wood-effect tiles in a similar tone can feel completely different depending on the grain. Fine linear detail creates a cleaner, quieter look, while stronger knots and contrast make the timber reference more obvious.

Variation between planks matters too. A more even shade mix feels controlled and contemporary; greater variation creates a looser, more natural-looking floor or wall. Check several product images so you can see how the pattern changes from piece to piece.

Plank direction changes the room

Long rectangular tiles naturally draw the eye along their length. Laid with the longest dimension of the room, they can reinforce a sense of flow; turned across it, they create a different rhythm and make the joints more noticeable.

Plank width plays a role as well. Broader formats feel calmer across larger areas, while narrower pieces create more lines and a busier timber effect.

Decide where the grain should do the work

Across a floor, wood effect creates long directional lines through the room; on a wall, the grain is seen closer and feels more decorative.
