Frequently Asked Questions About Patterned Tiles

What types of patterned tiles are available? Plus

Patterned tiles can include geometric repeats, decorative motifs, traditional-inspired designs, and more tonal patterns where the effect comes from subtle changes in colour and shape.

Are patterned tiles only suitable for traditional interiors? Plus

No. Traditional motifs can suit period schemes, but cleaner geometrics, tonal patterns and simplified repeats work well in contemporary interiors too.

Should I use patterned tiles on the floor or wall? Plus

Either can work, provided the tile is suitable for the intended surface. Floors allow the repeat to spread across the room, while walls create a more concentrated focal point. A decorative wall tile should not be assumed suitable for floor use.

What should I pair with patterned tiles? Plus

Quieter surfaces usually give the pattern more space to work. Plain colour, stone effects, simple cabinetry and restrained furniture can all help balance a more decorative tile.

Can I order patterned tile samples? Plus

Yes. Free samples let you compare the colours, finish and scale at home before ordering online. For stronger repeats, it is also worth viewing several tiles together so you can understand the full pattern.

Choosing patterned tiles: start with the repeat

The design on one tile is only part of the story. Once several tiles are laid together, shapes connect, motifs repeat, and the overall surface can look very different.

  • Smaller patterns tend to create a denser, more detailed effect, while larger geometrics read more clearly across a room.
  • Tonal designs keep that movement softer; stronger colour contrast makes the pattern much more pronounced.

Spanish and Italian manufacturers offer both ends of that spectrum, from decorative tiles rooted in traditional tilework to contemporary designs in porcelain and ceramic.

Patterned porcelain tiles and ceramic tiles should be chosen for their intended use as well as their appearance; check the specification before choosing a design for floors or walls.

Tile size and pattern scale are different things. A large tile can carry a small, detailed repeat, while several smaller tiles may join to form one larger motif.

Look at a room image or layout diagram alongside your sample to judge the finished effect.

Decide how much pattern you want

Pattern does not have to cover the whole room to make an impact.

A small area behind a basin or worktop can carry something quite expressive, while a patterned floor can set the direction for everything placed above it. Across larger walls or open floors, quieter repeats can introduce interest without becoming the only thing you notice.

The strongest schemes usually give the pattern a clear job rather than asking several surfaces to compete.

In hallways and other living spaces, a patterned floor can add character while the walls stay simple.

A matt finish gives the design a softer appearance; gloss catches the light and can make a decorative wall feel more expressive.

Choose by where it will live

Are patterned tiles difficult to clean?

The pattern itself does not determine how easy a tile is to maintain; the material, finish and texture matter more. Follow the manufacturer's cleaning advice, and use products suitable for both the tile and grout when dealing with everyday spills and stains.
